Superball Review

Helium's Superball + EP contains four new songs in addition to the Dirt of Luck cut "Superball." "Superball," in which Mary Timony's insightful, metaphoric lyrics are paired with an offbeat, whimsical melody, remains the best track on the EP. The new songs are quieter and feature Timony's sweet, breathy vocals backed by more mystical, haunting tunes. "What Institution Are You From?" has a repetitive, rhyming chorus set to a matching repetitive hook. "Lucky Charm" opens with a simple piano piece that explodes into intermittent, bold guitar riffs. "#12 L'Enfant" makes an interesting foray into Moog synth use. The strongest new track on the EP is "I am a Witch." Once again, the tune features more piano combined with jagged guitar chording. Timony's strong, feminine lyrics describe the havoc she'll wreak if she doesn't get what she deserves. Superball + is more for Helium fans than for those not familiar with the band. But for the converted, it's definitely worth owning. ~ Tracy Frey, All Music Guide
