Another in a line of reissues of the forgotten first album by the group, this might be the best packaging of those seemingly ancient songs. The sound quality is good, both early singles ("The Silent Sun" et al.) are included, the liner notes feature quotes by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, and the sleeve art is stunning -- post-apocalyptic horror reminiscent of Brueghel or Hieronymous Bosch. This record can be considered as a minor classic of '60s psychedelia. The songs seem quaint compared to the powerful Genesis of a few years later, but the band shows a maturity beyond its years even at this early stage. Take away the oppressive strings (which were added later on), and one can appreciate the talent inherent in Banks' piano playing and the passion in Peter Gabriel's youthful voice. As much as one might hate to say it, it's not difficult to agree with producer Jonathan King that this is "one of the great underrated albums." ~ Peter Kurtz, All Music Guide
