A quintet date with his Miles Davis bandmates George Coleman (tenor sax), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums), with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. Hancock's originals are striking--the title cut and "Dolphin Dance" have become jazz standards--and what could have been just a post-bop date is infused with well-digested avant-gardisms. One of the best jazz records of the '60s.
