Supa Dupa Fly

07/15/1997 3:00 AM, LAUNCH
J.R. Reynolds

This debut boasts the support of one of the most original music videos of 1997--"The Rain (SupaDupa Fly)," the "fly" track which features a bass-driven loop of Ann Peebles' 1973 R&B classic "I Can't Stand The Rain." Missy is unique in her hip-hop approach, displaying an unorthodox creative independence that led to her label/production deal, The Gold Mind, with Elektra Records. Guest artists on the set include '90s nasty girl Lil' Kim, Da Brat, Busta Rhymes, Ginuwine, Aaliyah and Timbaland, who also takes production credits. Crafting a cross-woven tapestry of hip-hop and R&B, Elliott dares to challenge pre-existing notions in both musical realms and scores as often as not with interesting groove-laden recordings. In addition to her own album, the rising writing and production star has worked on joints by Jodeci, Aaliyah, M.C. Lyte and Gina Thompson. Tracks of note include "Hit 'Em Wit Da Hee" and "Sock It 2 Me."
