Like their Factory import-only debut, Squirrel And G-Man Twenty- Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile, much of the material on their second album sounds rather half-baked (the band, meanwhile, exhibit no such problem). Approaching their material with equal parts arrogance and naiveté, they came up with a singular style of loose rock/funk highlighted by Ryder's stoned, shouty vocals. For many fans, this is quintessential Mondays. But Martin Hannett's bare production does little to flesh out their simple, riff-based ideas. Still, it does contain the classic "Wrote For Luck."
