Long Island, NY, singer/guitarist/songwriter Brendan B. Brown put together the quartet Wheatus as a vehicle for his witty, energetic rock songs, beginning with his brother, Peter Brown, on drums and adding multi-instrumentalist Phil A. Jimenez and bassist Rich Leigey (replaced in July 2000 by Mike McCabe). The group recorded their self-titled debut album in the Brown home, producing it themselves, and it was released by Columbia Records in August 2000; the album was preceded by the single "Teenage Dirtbag," which was featured in the film Loser. The week of the album's release, Wheatus embarked on their first national tour with labelmates Zebrahead. The band later departed Columbia to release 2005's Suck Fony. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
